How we check every idea
Every idea here is written with AI. None goes live until it passes a separate review against the list below, and most don't pass the first time: 114 of the 142 ideas live today were sent back for a fix at least once.
Four scores, at least 4 out of 5 on each
- It makes sense. A 4 to 7 year old gets what the elf "did" in a few seconds, and the title, steps, note and picture tell the same story.
- You can do it tonight. A tired grown-up who isn't crafty can follow the steps with things most US homes have, and the pose holds until morning.
- It's worth the work. The time on the card is honest, it uses a few things at most, and the morning cleanup takes under 5 minutes.
- It's its own idea. It doesn't copy another idea here, and a well-known classic only gets in with a real twist.
Seven hazards: any one fails the idea
- Fire or heat. Nothing hot or plugged in near paper or fabric.
- Toddler hazards. In ideas marked for toddlers, nothing small enough to choke on (marshmallows, magnets, coins, beads) and no string or ribbon long enough to wrap around a neck.
- Climbing and appliances. Nothing that invites a child to climb, to open or climb into an appliance, or to reach for a fan, a lamp or an outlet.
- Food and pets. No food that spoils overnight, and nothing toxic to kids or pets where a dog can reach it.
- Damage. No permanent marker, no stains, and only painter's tape on walls and doors.
- Scary messages. No note that could scare or shame a child.
- Blocked paths at night. Nothing across a hallway, a doorway or the stairs people use at night. A child's way out of their room is never blocked.
Every idea page ends with its own safety line. Read it before you set up: it says what to watch for with that idea.
Who checks
A separate review, also done with AI, that sees the idea and this list. A person reads every message.
The pictures
The pictures are AI illustrations of Moss, our own elf, made to match each idea's steps. Your elf and your setup will look a little different, and that's fine.
What we haven't done
